Two different types of substances are recognized by chemistry: elements and compounds. An element, as per Practical Chemistry Class 9 ICSE, is the simplest type of chemical substance; ordinary chemical means can not divide it into simpler chemical substances. Science knows about 115 elements, 80 of which are stable. Each element has its own unique set of physical and chemical properties (the other elements are radioactive). Elements such as iron, carbon, and gold are examples.

A compound is a multi-element combination. A compound's physical and chemical properties are different from its constituent elements ' physical and chemical properties; that is, it acts like a completely different substance. More than 50 million compounds are known, and more are discovered every day. Examples of compounds include water, penicillin, and chloride sodium (the common table salt chemical name).

The only ways in which matter can be present are not the elements and compounds. We often encounter objects that are more than one element or compound physical combinations. More than one substance's physical combinations are called mixtures. Two types of mixtures exist. A mixture of two or more substances is a heterogeneous mixture. It's easy to say that more than one substance is present, sometimes by the naked eye. A homogeneous mixture is a combination of two or more substances so closely mixed that the mixture acts as a single substance.
